Cancun Part Dos

Saturday morning, we joined a lot of members of Comunidad De Fe for their “Serve Saturday.”  We drove to an area called Chiapanecos, just outside of Cancun, where we have been building a relationship since last year.  There is a community center neighboring the primary school.  The community center was in very poor condition; however, it is where Doña Rita cooks and feeds all of the children every morning.

The original goal was to just replace the roof.  Marco and Carina shared the need with the church members, and one Saturday, they replaced most of the roof!  But they could not stop there.  Now, Comunidad De Fe partners with the Cancun Christian Doctors Association (which some of their members are a part of) and provide medical assistance on their Serve Saturdays, AND they have decided to fully replace the kitchen to provide a safe and sanitary place for Doña Rita to cook and for the children to eat!  Volunteers also go to provide haircuts for the children as well as pedicures for the ladies of the community.  Now, when they go, they all work side-by-side towards bettering the community center!  It is a beautiful friendship!

Below is a photo of the current kitchen that Doña Rita cooks in each morning.
We started our day with prayer, singing, and a short, inspirational message.  This is Jose Luis, the leader of the medical team.

Jose Luis and Marisol leading in singing and prayer time!
Aide gave the inspirational message before we began working.
Here is the back of the community center where you can see the new roof!
This is where they stored the water filtration tank for the community center, but it was stolen.  We are trying to figure out how to solve this problem.
Since we were working in the community center, the team of doctors set up in the school classrooms to do their work.  By the end of the day, two surgeries had been performed!!
This is Ernesto, member of COF Cancun.  He is an amazing dentist!
Another project we would like to do in the future is to fix their futbol (soccer) field.  Its current state is a rocky, uneven ground, so the children play on the concrete in front of the school.
This entire area used to be all under the ocean (a LONG time ago!).  Their ground is full of sea shells!!  Amazing!
Here, you can see the length of the community center.  We are hoping that once it is fixed and is safe under the new roof that the rooms will be used for sewing classes, etc.
Everywhere in the world, children love soccer!!
Here is a COF member providing a hair cut to a child from the community.
Here, you can see the difference from the old roof to the new roof.  Those are some brave men!
Volunteers of all ages came out to help their new friends in this community!
A game of duck, duck, goose about to commence!  COF kids and students all mixed in with the kids from Chiapanecos!
We replaced the screen in the children’s eating area to keep bugs out of their food.
This concrete wall was knocked down to change the layout in preparation for the new kitchen!!
Lunch time!!  Emilio and Jenny made loads of tortas for everyone!
Kristy passed out the chips while Dianna passed out wet-ones (next best thing to washing your hands)!
The lady in the middle in the next image is Doña Rita!  She lives in the community and comes to every Serve Saturday to help!  Here she is helping to prepare the tortas for lunch!  We hope she is proud of her new kitchen and knows how important her job is feeding those children!
Kristy and her lunch buddy (he LOVED Cheetos)!!
Here was my sweet lunch buddy!  She is the funniest person I have ever met!  She is 4 years old and is a ball of energy!
Here she is chatting with the big girls.:)
Sweet friends!
It was a beautiful day!  We are so thankful to have been able to take part in Serve Saturday with Comunidad De Fe!!  We feel so at home here with them knowing we are one big church family!
